Melissa, TX — Melissa continued its dominant 2025 campaign Friday night, powering past rival Lovejoy 49–14 in front of a raucous home crowd of more than 5,000. The victory not only extended the Cardinals’ winning streak but also rewrote a rivalry that has seen its share of classics over the past three seasons.
Rivalry Runs Deep
Just a year ago, Melissa fell in a 41–38 heartbreaker to Lovejoy. In 2023, the Leopards had also come out on top 28–7. But Melissa’s seniors remember 2022 — when they eked out a 36–35 win — and this year, they left no doubt who owned the rivalry. After edging out a win against the Anna Coyotes 40–34 on the road last week, the Cardinals returned home and delivered a statement performance against another one of the district’s heavyweights.

Cards in Command
Lovejoy struck first with an early field goal, but it didn’t take long for Melissa to seize control. The Cardinals rattled off 21 unanswered points by halftime, then turned the second half into a showcase of speed and defensive dominance. By the final quarter, the only suspense left was how high the scoreboard would climb.
Melissa’s defense forced multiple interceptions, including a highlight-reel pick-six by Izayah Cordell, while the offense piled up points on the ground and through the air.

District Picture
With the win, Melissa (4–1 overall, 4–0 in district) sits first in district, with Prosper Walnut Grove (5-0, 3-0) barely trailing behind them in the standings. Lovejoy (2–3, 1–2) finds itself in the middle of the pack, falling behind Denison to be 6th in the district — and still searching for their consistency.
For Melissa, the message is clear: the Cardinals are peaking at the right time — and making their case as a top contender not only in the district, but in all of 5A.
